TOKYO (Nikkei)-DDI Corp. and Nippon Idou Tsushin Corp. will set up
Monday a joint research facility to develop an advanced mobile
telephone system based on the code division multiple access (CDMA)
technology championed by Motorola Inc. and other North American
companies, company sources said.

The R&D center, set to begin operations next spring, will run tests on
prototype systems supplied by Motorola and Qualcomm Inc. of the U.S.
as well as NEC Corp. (6701), Fujitsu Ltd. (6702) and two other
Japanese equipment makers.

The joint lab's first priority will be establishing specifications and
ironing out differing standards among manufacturers, the sources said.

The two Japanese mobile telecom service providers aim to
commercialize CDMA2000 technology early in the next century. They
see the research collaboration as a precursor to further possible
cooperation, including joint services.
