I agree with you that McData appears to be heading towards a completely McData switch at some point down the road. (That is what I expected this time around.) Although this certainly could mean another potent Fibre Channel switch competitor, I am worried about another angle. If McData has been able to successfully take Brocade's intellectual property and put it on ONE ASIC, that would mean a 16-port ASIC, which would leapfrog where Ancor is today. Even if Ancor skips the 8-port ASIC, I seriously doubt that they are going beyond 16-ports on a single ASIC. That levels the playing field, and negates Ancor's lead in ASIC development. The other danger that I see is if McData and Brocade have a technology cross-licensing agreement, where Brocade would actually be able to use the 16-port ASIC that McData developed.
