On paper, Cisco & Lucent have broad product lines. But where does the lion's share of revenue come from? For Cisco, its routers. For Lucent, it's phone switches. If those two areas die off, they will suffer a bit. And guess what, those two areas are dying off.

Lucent and Ascend are better positioned than Cisco in the sense that they supply telecom companies. Even in Asia where there is supposedly no money, the governments still have to keep the phones working. And these days you have to spend capital to save money.

Cisco is heavy in corporate networks. Corporations stop buying in times of trouble no matter what.

All this is generalization, but roughly true. Realistically, each of these companies will be making money for a long time.
