Sequent Goes Live on Oracle Network Computing Architecture to Create Global Network, Reduce Costs
Rapid NCA Implementation of Oracle Supply Chain, Oracle Manufacturing and Oracle Financials Connects and Supports 2,700 Employees in 58 Offices
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL - news) announced today that Sequent Computer Systems, Inc. has successfully upgraded its business applications in less than three months to take advantage of Oracle's Network Computing Architecture (NCA). By adopting browser-based Oracle(R) Applications 10.7 NCA, Sequent has created a lower- cost global information network connecting 2,700 employees in 58 offices. The company, a leading manufacturer and distributor of high-end data center computers with revenues nearing $1 billion dollars, is running applications that support its manufacturing, supply chain and financial management activities.
Oracle Applications NCA Improves Data Quality, Cuts Time and Costs
Sequent initially turned to Oracle Applications NCA to improve the flow of information among its 300 manufacturing users and with approximately 200 of its primary suppliers. Traditional supplier EDI did not cost-effectively meet Sequent's needs.
''Oracle Applications and the NCA support are helping us move closer to just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing,'' said Bob Witt, CIO of Sequent. ''The savings associated with the manufacturing and supply chain improvements have more than justified the costs of implementing Oracle NCA.''
Running Oracle Web Suppliers, Sequent now provides its partners with direct access to production, sales forecast and other supply-oriented data using just a browser. This system has improved the quality of data and shortened the time required to communicate information throughout Sequent's entire supply chain.
In addition to manufacturing benefits, Oracle Applications NCA has helped Sequent in other areas. NCA provides companies with global connectivity allowing extended enterprise access. Sequent is looking to take full advantage of this global connectivity with NCA to consolidate certain business functions, such as general ledger, which are currently dispersed in various geographies and to manage them from a central location based at Sequent headquarters.
Oracle Applications NCA Reduces Support Costs
The NCA implementation also is reducing Sequent's computer support costs. Oracle Applications NCA avoids the need to install client software on each user's desktop by running all software on centralized servers using proven Internet standards and technology. As a result, companies using Oracle Applications NCA enjoy the full benefits of a graphical system without the administrative cost and complexity of traditional client/server systems. Sequent now has the ability to upgrade to new versions of applications at the server without the costs and time associated with upgrading each of the company's 2,600 PCs.
Additionally, Oracle Applications NCA are connecting Sequent's mobile salesforce. Half of the overall users and the entire salesforce work on laptop computers. NCA allows those users to connect and run applications from anywhere in the world. Salespeople are now able to access the applications while at a customer site or while traveling using a common browser.
Just as Sequent has created a global manufacturing and distribution organization, it has created a global information network using Oracle Applications NCA and the Internet.
