jmac,I heard friends in college talk about friends of friends that only invested. I never met one, so I had no role model. So I decided a person needed the skills of a stock analyst combined with a fund manager. It seems to work.
I am a "downsized" mechanical engineer form the aerospace industry. When it came time to either get another job or try investing I decided I would try investing for 2 years then re-evaluate. I studied while investing in mutual funds and minimal stock activity. When Magellan started moving to bonds I felt it was absolutly the wrong direction. Also I decided the tech sector was going to run so I sold my home and invested in Dell at 31 and Micron at 56. I hit my Micron dowside stop in less a week so goodby to Micron. I committed everything into Dell after reviewing companies for 2 weeks. I have done well enough to concentrate on stocks, golf, the mountains and flying.

I am absolutely not a professional analyst. I am an investor of my own funds only. When friends ask for investing "hot tips" I will not answer no matter how tempted. The problem even if you give someone your best stock tip the stock can go anywhere in the short run. A lot of people don't have the stomach to see a stock go negative and may bail just as it turns up.

Generic investing ideas are OK but the personality and pain tolerance varies too much to get specific.

As I don't discuss stocks with my friends I use SI as a way to test ideas and bounce ideas off others. When I first got on SI there were mostly bears trying to drive the stock down. Actually the bears make for great reading if they are logical and stick to thier point.

I honestly can not say how good of an investor I am yet. This year I committed totally to PC makers which as we all know has been great.

At some point down the line I will need to evaluate moving to other sectors. I believe the education I have gotten in the past 2 years can be carried over to other sector analysis. Until I try I don't know how I will do.

Sorry to be so wordy, Pat
