Nevin, I agree with all that you said. Furthermore, our export consists of much more "brain power" than "Brawn power", the latter has much higher value added as well. In order to increase the standard of leaving in the Asian countries, they have to adopt "industrial renovation" principles, which in essence accept the fact of life that in a technological society a very large segment of GDP are products that did not exist 20 years ago. To get to this state, one needs a vibrant venture infrastructure to provide all these bright kids the financial tools to get their dreams on the economic map. This is one of the major shortcomings in the economies of those countries. The wealth is centralized in large and "stodgy" organizations that do not have the flexibility nor the inclination to let the market dictate where the next "killer innovation" will come from.
