[Intermedia Communications Chosen to Connect State of Florida Agencies]
Company to Provide Cost-Effective, Reliable High-Speed Frame Relay Network
TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 29, 1998--The state of Florida has named Intermedia Communications Inc. (Nasdaq/NM:ICIX) as the provider of frame relay network services for the state of Florida SUNCOM telecommunications network. Based in Tampa, Intermedia Communications is the fourth largest provider of frame relay services between local access and transport areas (LATAs) in the country.
Under the terms of the five-year, $65 million contract, Intermedia will continue to provide frame relay network services for the state's SUNCOM network. Intermedia has been providing this service since 1995.
The SUNCOM Frame Relay Network is an outsourced frame relay network administered by the Department of Management Services (DMS) Information Technology Program. The network provides diverse, secure, and reliable wide area networking technology for all SUNCOM eligible customers.
"Intermedia is pleased to continue the SUNCOM Network partnership with the state of Florida," said David C. Ruberg, Intermedia's president, chairman and chief executive officer. "State and local governments are under the same pressure as businesses to find cost-effective solutions to their challenges. Frame relay is the technology of choice for those who want to communicate effectively now and well into the future."
Numerous state agencies are currently connected by the SUNCOM Frame Relay Network including Florida's Departments of Law Enforcement, Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and Transportation. Intermedia's network facilitates the rapid exchange of information between more than 2,400 end-user locations throughout the state including police departments, sheriffs' offices, and motor vehicle licensing offices.
"We are pleased to retain Intermedia Communications as our SUNCOM Frame Relay Network provider," said Bob Davis, Supervisor of Transport Engineering for the Department of Management Services (DMS) Information Technology Program. "Intermedia has demonstrated the know-how and capacity to connect our diverse agencies in a way that is cost-effective and very reliable. Working with Intermedia, we will continue to save our agencies money while delivering the quality frame relay services they have come to expect."
"Intermedia is committed to the government market," said George A. Christenberry, Jr., Vice President of Intermedia's Government Sales Division. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to continue to provide quality telecommunications service to the State of Florida."
Frame Relay is an emerging wide area network technology ideal for the transmission of data between remote computer networks or systems. Frame Relay is protocol insensitive allowing users to combine multiple protocols on a single frame relay backbone thus reducing the need for separate networks. This can save the significant expense incurred in the installation and management of multiple networks as well as monthly recurring costs.
Frame Relay also offers a Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee that ensures the quality of communication over the network. This QoS guarantee makes frame relay a cost-effective technology for not only data transmission, but the implementation of applications such as video conferencing as well.
The contract takes effect on November 1, 1998. |
