This kind of viewpoint is part of the problem. It isn't important whether you or I see the benefit. What matters is that the individual user sees his use of the drug as beneficial in some way to himself and it doesn't violate anyone else's rights for him to use it. If it doesn't violate my rights it's not my concern, no matter what my personal opinion might be. Incidentally, I've never tried drugs of any kind nor do I plan to.

I think the adamant opposition that you mention is because people view this issue in terms of the fundamental right to make decisions for ourselves, not in terms of the drugs specifically.
