As Microsoft Corp. struggles to get the next major beta of Windows NT 5.0 out the door, rival Novell Inc. is nipping at its heels with its next version of Novell Directory Services running natively on NT.
At PC Expo earlier this month, Novell, of Provo, Utah, demonstrated an early release of NDS on NT, due to ship commercially this fall. Novell began previewing NDS on NT privately for select customers about six months ago but has yet to release a beta.
The software's momentum is getting the attention of Microsoft, whose decision to roll out a third beta of NT 5.0 will push back its release and the release of the company's competing Active Directory, possibly to the second half of 1999.
Microsoft CEO Bill Gates met with Novell CEO Eric Schmidt for several hours earlier this month in Washington to discuss, among other things, NDS on NT, Novell officials confirmed.
