I get your point but don't you think that it would be prudent to at least do some sort of screening to make sure that the ED is not secondary to something else? Perhaps at least a CBC/Chem Panel/UA along with a stress test to evaluate cardiac function?

If these things check out normal then I say fine and Write up the Viagra script. But to assume that doing any tests is a waste of time and money IMO is borderline malpractice. How can you justify missing out on a diagnosis of diabetes or cardiovascular disease just because you think that there is a good chance that the etiology will end up being idiopathic? Good medicine starts by playing it safe and not making decisions based on assumptions.
