This argument won't work with authoritarians. I found one that will. Here it goes: anyone who knows anything about war knows that espionage is critical to victory. I would like to know any scenario in which we could possibly win the battle of double agents. How many US law enforcement officers have been bought out by the Colombians vs. how many Colombians we have bought off to snitch? They can raise the stakes a lot higher than we can i.e. give more money than Ross Perot or wipe out your entire family than the CIA or the DEA can possibly pressure a spy.

As long as there is big US demand, there will be more money and guns talking on the other side with more willingness to use it. The drug war is simply unwinnable, according to Sun Tzu.
