I think the E-coli theory fits the best. Given that any tier 1 company which uses/plans on using the thing gets diseased(Compaq, IBM, HP).

Given that K6-2-266 is readily available, while K6-2-300 is not, points to the exact same problem as the K6-233 on .35u (K6-200 was available K6-233 was not).

All AMD has to do, to yield high qtys of K6-2-300 is to jack up the voltage a little.
