Jeffery,

For one thing, before the standard is available, why would Compaq
follow the suit with Dell who actually is a competitor? Anyway Microcom or some similar companies will come up with real 56k modem pretty soon, too.

Further more, Compaq can't afford to ship a x2 technology and found out
the world out there is not all USRobotics. In fact, some of their customers are using either Rockwell
or Lucent's modem product. Now, what should Compaq do? Get field returns?

Therefore it is premature and naive to think that USRobotics can twist everyone's arms
and expect everyone to follow suit.

One last thing, Compaq may even want to leveage their position in servers. Do not forget
who is the leading supplier of web servers. Why should those web server suppliers let one company--USRobotics---control their RAS destiny???

Therefore all the server manufacturers would want USRobotics to listen very carefully:
Behave or we simply will not do business with you for NOW.

Of course, if Compaq wants even to produce the RAS equipments, then it is entirely different scenario: In that case, USRobotics and COmpaq will
compete. While Rockwell is pruely a modem IC supplier, there is no conflict of interest.

Well, I'd like to hear your comments.

Thanks,

Rishi
