Steven,

Welcome to the Asia Forum. Eager to hear your contributions. The stand off between Gordon and Estrada was major news when I was in Manila a couple of weeks ago. My take on it was that there was deep enmity from the election. While I think Estrada may have moved to hastily its clear to me that Gordon should stand down rather then precipitate a bloody confrontation between supporters. Subic Bay was to have been a jewel of a place but physical conflicts will only delay the return of potential off shore investment.

I guess it isn't surprising to see these young democracies stumble along. In the U.S. we had our own long list of problems, the largest of which was of course, our civil war.

Do you have any opinions on Estrada? Is he really the bufoon many press reports seem to reflect?

I sense that things are getting strained politically here in Malaysia. With Mahatir bringing Daim onto his cabinet and doing the usual double talk to explain why there isnt any overlap with Anwar there is a perceptable tension. But I do not think we will see anything like the bloody clashes in Indonesia.

Best,
Stitch
