Samsung Wins $60m ICO Handset Order 06/30/98 SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, 1998 JUN 30 (NB) -- By Martyn Williams, Newsbytes. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. [SK:64050] has won a US$60 million contract from ICO Global Communications to design and manufacture dual-mode wireless telephone handsets for use on its planned satellite communications service. Under the terms of the deal, Samsung Electronics will supply 100,000 dual-mode handsets to ICO, capable of working on the company's satellite based telephone network and conventional terrestrial cellular networks. Half of the telephones will be GSM compatible and half will be CDMA compatible. Product development is scheduled for completion in 1999 with shipping planned for 2000, the year ICO is planning to launch service. Last week, ICO announced deals with NEC Corp. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. for the supply of 170,000 dual mode handsets with GSM compatibility. Combined with the order announced today, ICO has planed orders for 230,000 GSM compatible handsets and 50,000 CDMA compatible handsets. The deal follows an agreement signed last year between the two companies which specifies Samsung will supply two million handsets to fifty service providers around the world in a three year period from 2000.
