I have already posted this research before, but I guess you missed it:

biz.yahoo.com
...the worldwide CD-RW market is projected to exceed 15 million units in 1999. Nearly 50 percent of these devices may be installed in PCs as manufacturers begin offering CD-RW as a storage option. By comparison, the worldwide shipments of CD-R and CD-RW drives this year is estimated to be more than 6 million units, up from 2 million in 1997 and 1 million in 1996.

That's right. CD-RW drives are going to sell more units this next year alone than total Zip drives have sold in history. CD burning is a wonderful tool for archives, backup, and distribution. Just yesterday, our HTML/Shockwave guy backed up his entire 6 gig hard drive onto CD-R discs. Total cost? We buy CD-R discs at J&R Computer here in NYC for 0.49› apiece after rebate. That means we backed up 6 Gigabytes of critical files for less than $3. That my friend, is the reason why CD burning is rapidly becoming the way to go. The CD adoption rate is totally eclipsing Zip sales. By the end of next year, there will be around 25 Million CD burners out there.

In fact, our graphics guy is going to buy the same Yamaha 4260tx CD-RW drive (6x read, 4x write, 2x re-write) because it is so good. He is finally trashing his Jaz for good. Not that he used it much anyway. Actually he avoided it like the plague due to its "flakiness." He has about 7 or 8 jaz discs he bought in the first year he owned a Jaz drive. He hasn't bought a Jaz disc since.

CD burners sales are growing at a geometric rate. This is something Iomega failed to do with Zip. Now, the CD-burner adoption curve is clearly leaving Zip behind.
