thanks; good comments;

from the yahoo board:

The breakdown of revenues can be found in their last quarterly report
(hey you gotta do some legwork)
As far as revenue projections, here's my two cents. I wrote the
following message a few days ago but it is still relevant to your
question:
Real has gone through many pains to diversify their revenue stream as
much as
possible. Revenues come from these sources:
1. Software - Servers and Player Plus.
2. Advertising - Banner ads in all of their media properties
3. Media Properties - Timecast, Film.com, etc.
4. Broadcast Networks - Real Broadcast Network
1. Software provides the bulk of their revenues but in the long run Real
will have to
provide more consumer products besides the
Player Plus. Real has created a powerful consumer brand on the net and
they need to
leverage that into creating other products.
Streaming servers will increasingly become a commodity on the Internet
so prices will
come down. As the server technology matures, the server business will be
a steady
stream of income but not necessarily a growing one.
2. This is perhaps one of the fastest growing aspects of their business
(considering that
it was virtually non-existent a year and a half ago). Real has only
begun to tap into the
enormous power of their website (which is on the top ten list on the
net)
3. As far as I'm concerned Real is a media company. Granted, most of
their content is
simply aggregation but lets not forget that TV Guide is a highly
profitable and powerful
media holding. If they continue to increase or maintain their market
share of the
streaming media they can become the single most important source for
accessing this
type of media on the net. They are already doing this with their "media
channels" on
the real player.
4. Real Broadcast Network - This network is the cable networks of the
90's. Media
companies who need to reach mass audiences will have to pay Real to use
this network
to spread their bandwith requierements all over the country instead of
concentrating it
in a single point of contact.
There are many other potential sources of revenue that I haven't
mentioned but these
four comprise the main ones.
Assuming that Microsoft does not jump in with both feet (a big if), this
company has a
Real chance.
