The Global Positioning System is comprised of a large fleet of satellites. At a given time, several of these satellites are within range of GPS receivers. The GPS receiver must be able to detect the signal from a certain minimum number of these satellites (3-6?, I'm not sure of the exact number) to achieve an accurate fix to determine geographical position. The system thus has a fair amount of redundancy and the loss of a small number of GPS satellites would probably go unnoticed by GPS users. I don't think PLFM is taking much of a risk in being dependent on GPS (it probably would be more risky not to use it).
