Dan, depends on the depth currently being offered. If your market order was for 1000 shares but only 100 were offered, you'd get 100 at the ask, and 900 more above the ask.

I placed an order to BUY from someone who was SELLING at 15 5/16

What is your quote source? What was the volume being offered? Someone likely slipped in just ahead of you and took the whole amount offered at 15 5/16.
