Most online firms and firms that simply route shorts will get you the first upbid. There is an upbid rule on the NASDAQ. See the nasdaq's website or nasdr.com for details. That is if you have a market sell short order. If you have a limit short sale order, well, you know the very worst you are going to get is the limit.

For our cliients, on a market short for a nasdaq stock,if there is a spread, I might offer the shares for sale short inbetween or on the offer, thereby getting a price imprvoement, and then if an upbid shows itself, go ahead and hit that. Since I cant smack downbids, I might as well try and offer it inbetween or on the offer.
