ATMI sees Q2, Q3 earning below year-ago

DANBURY, Conn., June 30 (Reuters) - ATMI Inc. said Tuesday it expected earnings in the
second and third quarters to be about 50 percent less than its profits in the comparable quarters last
year.

The company, which provides products and services for semiconductor device manufacturing,
earned $1.34 million, or $0.14 per share, in the second quarter last year. It earned $3.98 million, or
$0.21, in the third quarter.

Analysts on average had estimated ATMI's earnings at $0.21 per share in the second quarter and
$0.23 in the third, according to First Call.

The company said it expected second-quarter revenues to fall about 20 percent from $27.38 million
in the first quarter of this year. In the previous second quarter, revenues reached $13.63 million.

ATMI said it expected the equipment portion of its business to be under pressure for some time. As
a result, it is engaging in selected temporary plant shutdowns, reducing executive staff salaries and
employing a hiring freeze.

''However, overall we intend to remain aggressively growth-oriented,'' said Gene Banucci, chief
executive.

The company said it would not cut back on research and development, new product introductions
or consideration of acquisitions.
