David, think about how many people shop at Wal*mart. People who grew up shopping at Wal*mart. Now all Wal*mart has to do is put a sign up in their book section of each brick and mortar store that says "Now on the 'net! Browse the virtual store and buy online at www.wal-mart.com!".

Joe and Jane sixpack, who just bought their first PC last Christmas, go home and log on to wal-mart.com online. They're pretty pleased with themselves for being so cutting-edge. They start telling their friends "Wal-mart is on the web" People know already what Wal-mart stands for, what they sell, how much it costs, etc. Joe and Jane run into a friend who's been on the 'net longer than them, and they tell him about Wal-mart being on the web. Friend says so what, Amazon.com has been on the 'net selling books for a long time; I buy from them. Joe and Jane are skeptical, because they don't know Amazon. "But this is Wal-mart", they say. They are comfortable with Wal*mart; they know and like Wal*mart. They're going to buy online from Wal*mart, not Amazon. They might log onto Amazon.com and browse around. But they're going to stick with Wal*mart, unless they can't find what they're looking for there.
