Intelect Communications Announces SONETLYNX(TM) to Provide Security Backbone Networks for Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Airports
Over 100 SONETLYNX Nodes Will Triple Network Speeds, Provide Common Communications Infrastructure and Support Y2K Compliance
Intelect Communications Reports Financing of $5 Million Equity To Reduce Debt and Increase Working Capital
RICHARDSON, Texas, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Intelect Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: ICOM - news), a leading provider of products and services to seamlessly integrate voice, data and video technologies, announced today that its Intelect Network Technologies business unit has received a $1.7 million order for SONETLYNX(TM) fiber-optic multiplexers to be installed at Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia International Airport and Newark International Airport for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The order is scheduled for shipment during the third quarter of this year.

''This contract emphasizes the advantage and potential of SONETLYNX's unique, integrated multipoint technology,'' stated Peter Ianace, President and CEO of Intelect Network Technologies. ''SONETLYNX multiprotocol and multipoint network solutions dramatically reduce costs by eliminating other hardware components such as channel banks and Ethernet bridges. This is a key differentiator of our product and addresses rapidly expanding opportunities for seamless multiprotocol integration in private networks. We are aggressively targeting these applications both domestically and internationally.''

Each airport has a Synchronous Optical NETwork (SONET) ring used exclusively to provide communications for the facility's security systems. The three airport SONET networks tie into the Port Authority's larger Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) ring. ''When all the SONETLYNX nodes are installed, all three airports will be able to work from the same communications infrastructure,'' according to Jeffery Smith, national director of field engineering for Mosler, Inc. of Hamilton, Ohio, which is the prime contractor for the project.

Another benefit of the new network is that it helps the airports comply with the Federal Aviation Administration's year 2000 (Y2K) requirement. The FAA requires all airports to upgrade hardware and software systems so they can accommodate the change to the next century without losing data integrity.

''Intelect was selected from a number of potential vendors for three reasons,'' noted Smith. ''First, we were impressed with the quality of the SONETLYNX product. Intelect was also chosen because of the extensive technical support it offered, and the level of commitment that was shown by the entire company.''

Mosler, Inc., an employee-owned and managed company, has provided security systems for a number of other airports around the country. The company's headquarters are at 8509 Berk Boulevard, Hamilton, Ohio 45105-2213.
