Hello, debating scientists- Have you ever looked into the remarkable developments at Mount St. Helens since its 1984 eruption? There are many geological formations there which would seem to the casual observer to be thousands if not more years old, but we know that they have only been in existence for 12 years or so. Canyons formed which seem to have been carved out by the winding river below, coal forming in the peat formations below Spirit lake, petrified forests forming, etc. Christian scientists, (Ken Ham, I believe was the one I heard), postulate that the flood account of Genesis could have been the prime source of the geological formations of the face of the earth today, if one does not view the flood as a mere 'torrential downpour' but as a worldwide catastrophic event, volcanic and terrible. There are some good videos, and I'll assume books, on the topic, which can explain this THEORY in fuller detail. Quite interesting, if I might say so.
The process of scientific dating is one which I consider quite often. It seems to me that it is a prime case of circular reasoning. We observe a phenomenon, form a theory, and then prove the theory with more occurances of the phenomenon. Perhaps, there are other ways of interpreting the signs of the age of the earth which we see around us.
Regardless, these types of debates force me to reconsider my battles, and how I go about fighting them. Would I die for the idea of a 7-24 hour day creation? No. Would I die for my denomination? No. Would I give up my faith in God if someone could prove a 3 trillion year old universe? No.
Would I die for my saviour? Well, I'd like to think so. God help me if that moment should come.
"Thou wilt keep him at perfect peace, whose mind is staid on thee, because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord forever, for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength." (Reference momentarily forgotten, Isaiah somewhere, I believe)
