i would imagine that a larger spread reduces volume (as in the case when the MMs wish to reduce daytrading or slow momentum of sales). so, although MMs take a bigger piece of each trade, the number of trades is sure to be less with a large spread. usually when i see an exagerated bid-ask, it is for the above reasons (slow momentum and reduce daytrading).

but one thing we all can agree on- it sucks!
