07-02-98 Chip Makers Plan Further Production Cut This Month
Korea's leading semiconductor makers are considering a second round of production cut to help boost memory prices in the world market, industry sources said yesterday.
Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest memory chip producer, plans to stop its assembly lines for one week some time this month.
The nation's No.2 semiconductor maker, Hyundai Electronics Ind. Co., is also considering idling its chip production lines for a week in July, allowing workers to go vacationing.
Last month, the two companies halted chip production for one week respectively in their hopes to ease supply glut and shore up falling prices in the global market.
As a result, the prices for 16-megabit DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips rose to $3 apiece, while 64-megabit DRAM chips are now quoted at around $8 per unit as of the end of last month, said the industry sources.
LG Semicon, the third largest chip maker in the nation, however, said it will not reduce its production volume because of low chip stockpile. (NIS) |
