in light of advanced fibre's (AFCI) implosion in after-hours trading (double whammy of earnings warning due to GTE loss/slowing sales in china and CEO resignation), would anyone knowledgeable of their technology care to comment?

for the record, AFCI's flagship product is the universal modular carrier (UMC), "a digital loop carrier system that allows phone, cable, and other service providers to connect customers to the central office switch no matter what combination of copper wire, fiber-optic line, or coaxial cable network. UMC is also designed for voice and data communications through traditional telephone to ISDN and DSL on copper wire and wireless analog radio networks." it can handle up to 2,000 subscribers.

they've sold it to more than 450 phone companies in the u.s. big customers include alltel, ameritech, pactel, and sprint. also a number of foreign companies in europe (france telecom), asia, and latin american (most recently in venezuela).

i think their product's got a nice profitable niche in the "non-urban service area." and while this statement is probably against the board charter, i'm looking at it from a long-term buy and hold, the market oversold, perspective. any comments are appreciated.

a first time 'last mile' poster,
-chris.
