I think it did. It depressed the xDSL companies prices. If ATT decided to go cables and IF MCI/WORLDCOM will decide to do the same by going after TIME WARNER or signing up an alliance contract with them, the success of ADSL deployment might be significantly slowed down.

I have read that @Home thru their cable partners can reach up to 60 million homes which they claimed is twice as much as Time Warners reach. But it also means that up to 90 million homes could go to cable for high bandwidth instead of xDSL, unless xDSL priced better. And we all know that it is not. Or unless xDSL will be deployed faster then cable, wich IMO is quite likely. As far as I know cable's 2 way conversions are planned to be completed only by year 2000.
