Novell Demonstrates Business Intranet Capabilities at Multimedia Services Affiliate Forum
Technology and Internet Service Providers Worldwide Join Novell to Connect, Extend Networks in First Public Demonstration
SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 3 /PR Newswire/ -- Novell Inc , joining with service providers and other technology companies, today demonstrated Novell Directory Services(TM) (NDS(TM)) extending business networks to include the Internet and intranets by providing seamless access to network resources anywhere in the world. The demo was held during a meeting of the Multimedia Services Affiliate Forum (MSAF) at the IBM Almaden Laboratory in San Jose, CA. Participants in the Novell demo included the following: AT&T, Belgacom, Bellcore, Cisco Systems, Deutsche Telekom, Hong Kong Telecom, ITK Telekommunikation AG, Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co., Ltd., Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, Unisource, as well as a new MSAF member, NYNEX.
Novell's demo showcased NDS in the first-ever truly global directory service to the Internet. The demonstration, which spanned three continents, showed NDS granting access to users in one country to network resources in another country. This was accomplished by accessing the identity of the user in the global, interconnected directory.
"Today's demonstration proves the value of NDS as a technology that extends business network directions to include the Internet, intranets, remote access and wide-area networking," said Neal Castagnoli, director of Business Internet Services at Novell. "NDS, NetWare Connect, and IntranetWare provides the business community with the ability to access global resources affordably, reliably, and in a secure and easy-to-use manner."
Adding to the overall content of the global network was first-time participant, NYNEX, which built a site for the live connection to the demonstration network. "NYNEX, on behalf of its customers, most of which are global in scope, has identified network interoperability among carriers as a critical need," said Joe Varello, director of Enterprise Networks at NYNEX. "The NYNEX strategy is to join world-class technology partners, such as Novell, to bring added value to our customers."
Bellcore, the telecommunications software and engineering firm, and Novell are jointly installing NDS into carrier infrastructures, creating operating systems and back-end billing and administration procedures. "The synergy between Novell and Bellcore is evident," said Adrian Viego, principal engineer at Bellcore. "Novell provides the directory technology, and we leverage our experience with ISPs in deploying that technology, resulting in shorter upstart times for ISPs and other service providers we support."
About MSAF
Novell conducted the demonstration during a meeting of the Multimedia Services Affiliate Forum, a group of over 40 leading technology and telecommunications companies working together to provide interconnected, global business networks. MSAF focuses on open technologies and services that will ensure interoperability, thereby enabling ISVs, content providers, and end users to access and take advantage of global business-class services on the Internet, and contribute greatly to the Internet's growth. Earlier this year, MSAF selected Novell technologies based on NDS as the basis for ensuring interoperability among member networks.
Growing NDS Support
Novell also announced growing industry support of its business-class, Internet solutions with the addition of Deutsche Telekom conducting market trials of business networks based on NDS, IntranetWare(TM), and NetWare Connect(TM) (see related Deutsche Telekom announcement). Deutsche Telekom now joins AT&T and NTT in Japan as the world's third largest service provider and world's largest ISP to deploy Novell's business-class, Internet/intranet services.
====================================================================== Many of the participants in this demonstration make our "short" list of potential suitors including AT&T, Cisco Systems, Deutsche Telekom, Hong Kong Telecom, ITK Telekommunikation AG, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation and IBM. Now what (if any) deals are going on behind the scene. Notice both Sun Microsystems and Hewlett Packard were not at this function <hmm??>. IBM and CSCO no go to the top of my short list.
By the way who is Bellcore and what affiliations do they have with any companies on our short list?
