There are several ways of getting around trees and buildings:

1) Increase transmitter antenna height
2) Increase receiver antenna height
3) Use repeaters or "beambenders"
4) Chop down trees
5) Move buildings
6) Go DIGITAL!!!

From a more practical sense, digital offers better penetration through
trees and foliage than analog signals since digital signals can be encoded to protect the data stream against the noise and fading that are inherent in a radio channel. Also, the use of repeaters or beambenders to reach "shadowed areas" is commonplace in the industry.
