yxmas--

At a guess, I'd say these trading patterns--stock moving down rapidly on lower volume, moving up less rapidly on higher volume--don't have all that much to do with market makers; or rather, they don't have to do with trickery. I saw something similar one day last week: what was happening was that the mms were being hit with a very large number of small trades, mostly sells, and were quickly adjusting their bid/ask (and mostly adjusting it down). Lots of little trades can have a much greater effect on the price of a stock that a few big ones, as the SOES bandits well know.
