Soccer fan puts out flame to unknown soldier

PARIS (Reuters) - A drunken Mexican World Cup soccer fan extinguished the flame burning under the Arc de Triomphe to honor France's war dead, officials said Wednesday.

Police said Rodrigo Rafael Ortega, 24, described as a soccer fan, was detained overnight after pouring a glass of unspecified liquid on to the flame.

He was arrested for offending the dead and being drunk in public but was released Wednesday without charges.

The War Veterans Ministry said Mexican Ambassador Sandra Fuentes Berain and the French junior minister for War Veterans, Jean-Pierre Masseret, were "deeply hurt" by the "unspeakable act" and would solemnly revive the flame later in the day.

"By defacing the grave of the unknown soldier, the memory of those who fell for France and their honor has been offended," the ministry said in a statement.

The flame has been burning since 1921 over a grave containing the remains of an unnamed French soldier who died in World War One.

Incidents involving the flame are rare, although an Australian was arrested last October for using it to cook an egg.
