Ken, you bring up a good point (one that I tried to bring up with S.Bull), and that is that managements of the other firms have not taken a serious step to move to direct marketing. I have maintained that one is either a direct marketer or not a direct marketer. Not both at the same time. Anything short of total direct marketing is inefficient compared to DELL, and it is this inefficiency that gives DELL the OVERWHELMING upper hand in this environment. We haven't even begun to see the real erosion of CPQ and IBM's market share thanks to DELL (and to some extent to HWP's aggressive marketing). Good for IBM that they have other businesses to rely upon. Poor Mr. Pfieffer! In Houston, they just changed the name of the Summit (the Rockets' home) to the Compaq Center. Disgusting! Maybe Austin needs a major sports arena!

BTW, I've heard rumors that DELL and IBM have been talking about IBM exiting the PC business in favor of DELL, with the assurance that IBM would be able to supply components to DELL as well as software and consulting (see Vertical Integration, a.k.a. the opposite of CPQ's business model). Interesting prospect, isn't it?
