I always thought of a pilot as a rather prestigious position. If it were me, I wouldn't demean it by saying I was a card-carrying member. My opinion only.

The difference between a pilot and a bus driver is the price of their equipment. Probably takes more skill to drive a bus through Chicago, NY of SF in traffic than it takes to watch a plane virtually fly itself. True, there are many instruments to learn in a plane but it would require an engineering degree and lower salary if this was an important feature. Training teaches pilots how to use instruments.

Air freight vs ground freight is the same thing. Pilots are paid more than truckers here because their $ responsibility is higher both in volume of cargo carried and cost of a plane vs a panel van. What is fair? Who knows? Still, they are pretty much bus drivers or truckers so the Union makes sense.

Do I like Unions? No, but sometimes they are needed when CEO's get bloated salary and don't share with the "bus drivers".
