Obviously Bre-X didn't prove anything! But my recollection was that they had several thousand holes drilled. The amount of drilling is not so much the issue as the density of drilling to prove to geologic standards that between the drill holes it is not only likely, but it is highly probable that the same material exists. In a Placer deposit the rules change a bit plus trenching for testing and open pit recovery seems to be a method GE may pursue. But those are the basics.

More dense drilling increases the confidence of the content of the ore and the larger the land mass the more drilling you need to make that determination.
