John,

First of all, the Oppenheimer Comdex report is in-accurate. Rockwell does indeed have a working
56K PCM modem running from their data pump DSP using external memory instead of mask-ed ROM data pump.

This really surprised a lot of experts--most experts predict that Rockwell is at least 2 to 4 months behind.

The story about x2 technology is that a few French technologists wrote this memo about"information driveway" and talked to Rockwell.
The Rockwell people told them to go away because "USA is leading the way for Information SuperHighway, we don't care about Information Driveway".

Then these Frenchmen managed to get USRobotics interested and here it comes x2 technology.

Anyway I want to make two pints:

(1) 56K is really not new modulation scheme along the V.34bis path; it is looking at the problem from changing the rules--i.e., from two analog local loops to one local analog loops.
As such, it is much simpler in algorithm than V.34bis.
(2) 56K (or PAM) is only possible because of internet phenomenum. There was no market for such a product before. But with internet, it becomes attractive.

Therefore my friend, be careful of the price ride of USRX.

Rishi
