Steve, actually, I don't think they could have designed a better strategy...

They start with a complete, quality ridden, beautiful bike that any (most) Harley rider would love to own. Many dream of owning one some day. They build up this excitement and reputation of the best bikes available. And when almost every rider knows of them, and desires them, they produce a bike that is within reach of most of the market.

So they start from the top, create the lure, and then reach the masses without having a stigma (how dare you try and compete with HD)

That would be something...and I think it would work. But management would have to be more open to changing their mission somewhat. And more assembly line/automation would need to be introduced.

For now, though, they need to keep producing the best american bikes, and keep marketing as such. Make the HD lovers admire and aspire to own one. Then the options are unlimited to market share.
