Silicon Valley Group Expands Board With Key Appointment of Former Intel Vice President

Addition Brings Long-Time Semiconductor Industry Veteran to SVG

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 2, 1998--Silicon Valley Group (SVG)(NASDAQ:SVGI - news), a leading supplier of wafer processing systems to the worldwide semiconductor industry, today announced it has expanded its board of directors with the appointment of industry veteran Ken Thompson.

Thompson is best known for his 25 years at Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news; Santa Clara, Calif.), where he was most recently vice president of technology, manufacturing engineering.

Commenting on the appointment, SVG chairman and chief executive officer Papken S. Der Torossian stated, ''Ken is an important strategic addition to our already strong board. He brings a broad
industry perspective and in-depth semiconductor manufacturing expertise.

''Most importantly, having spent 25 years at the world's leading chip manufacturing company, Intel, he understands what our customers need most -- technically and from a manufacturing standpoint. In his most recent position at Intel Corp., Thompson managed all of the company's manufacturing engineering and capital equipment procurement. Prior to that, he led all of Intel's microprocessor wafer
fabs and was responsible for establishing and overseeing the company's offshore assembly operations.

Before joining Intel, Thompson worked for Ampex Corp., in its core memory group. In addition to his new board position at SVG, Thompson serves on the boards of PRI Automation and GaSonics International. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.

With the addition of Thompson, SVG's board now consists of six members, including Der Torossian; William Hightower, SVG's president and chief operating officer; William Martin, retired chief executive officer of Plantronics Inc.; Nam Suh, head of the department of mechanical engineering and director of the Manufacturing Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Lawrence Tomlinson, vice president and treasurer of Hewlett-Packard.
