SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 3, 1998--

Motorola is the first to obtain the acceptance test after its Wireless Messaging System (WMS) received the official certification from China Telecom

Motorola's Asia Pacific Paging Networks Division (APPND) announced today that it is the first paging infrastructure manufacturer to receive an official certification from China Telecom, having passed all the stringent acceptance tests laid out by China Telecom for their FLEX(TM) nationwide multi-frequency roaming system.

The award of this certificate follows closely on Motorola's Wireless Messaging System (WMS) being the first system to be awarded the official Signaling System Number 7 (SS7) type approval certificate and the first of its kind to have gone through the rigorous performance testing for SS7 capability. The most recent certification testing has shown that the Wireless Messaging Gateway (WMG) paging terminal is capable of processing over 200 pages per second, the highest processing capacity in the paging industry, as tested and certified by China Telecom.

Since the launch of China Telecom's nationwide roaming paging network in 1997, Motorola's WMS has been installed in seventeen provincial cities and seven provinces in China, including Henan, Ningxia, Zhejiang, Liaoning, Guangxi, Yunnan and Sichuan province. Motorola expects these systems to provide state-of-the-art paging services to more than a hundred cities in the country, with total system capacity exceeding 10 million subscribers, considerably more than any other industry supplier.

"With this acceptance test, we have once again shown our ability as the premier paging infrastructure supplier in China with our high performing Wireless Messaging System," said Mr. Jeff Dryjanski, Vice President & General Manager of Motorola's APPND.

"Motorola's latest state-of-the-art Wireless Messaging System not only establishes new benchmark for high-speed, high capacity and feature-rich platform for the paging industry, it also meets all the stringent test required by China Telecom. Paging carriers should rest assured that Motorola's high quality products, combined with the strong local engineering support to provide a winning combination for high growth and exceptional performance," Mr. Dryjanski continued.

Motorola's Wireless Messaging System (WMS) paging infrastructure platform includes the Wireless Message Gateway(TM) paging terminal, featuring the highest processing capabilities in the industry: the RF-Conductor!(TM), a high capacity paging network controller; and Nucleus(R) paging transmitters with RF-Baton!(TM) network interface.

The FLEX Protocol, created by Motorola, is the global de facto standard for one-way high-speed paging. Adopted by operators in all of the top ten world's largest paging markets, Motorola's FLEX paging protocols include FLEX one-way, ReFLEX(TM) two-way and InFLEXion(TM) voice transmission technologies.

The FLEX Protocol is the national standard for high-speed paging in Japan and Korea, and is also a national standard in India and Russia. In addition, it has been adopted by China's MPT (Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications) as its nationwide high-speed paging standard and it is included in an ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Recommendation.

In addition to the protocols, the FLEX Technologies include a robust product portfolio of pagers, components, infrastructure, test equipment, application protocols, and software. There are over 160 FLEX technology-based systems in commercial operation in more than 30 countries worldwide.

Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications, semiconductors, and advanced electronic systems, components, and services. Major equipment businesses include paging and data communications, cellular telephone, two-way radio, personal communications, automotive, defense and space electronics and computers. Motorola semiconductors power communication devices, computers and millions of other products Motorola's 1997 sales were $29.8 billion.
