Tim, "... and why didn't Lucent fight harder?" -- Lucent has almost reached the point (like YHOO and AMZN) where it is irrelevant what is actually going on with the business operations of the company. All that matters is : it's 9:30 A.M. on another weekday in New York, so therefore the value of the company will start going up some more. Who needs to bother chasing (mere) $750 million contracts?
