Rockwell role in GPS withering:

Rockwell has announced that it plans to split its semiconductor business into a separate company at calendar year end. The GPS-component division of Rockwell will be included with this spin off. This change might impact Lowrence, which assembles consumer-grade GPS receivers in Mexico using Rockwell parts.

Further, Rockwell plans to cut jobs. Of the 3,800 jobs to be cut, 720 will be in Rockwell Collins, Rockwell's avionics group based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Rockwell avionics compete with Trimble/Honeywell's.

In August 1996, Rockwell sold its defense and aerospace operations. As a result of this, Boeing picked up the business of manufacturing GPS satellites.
