Clark,

"Sinophilic", wow, thats a big word.

I trust them MUCH less than I trust the Japanese or Koreans

There needs to be a definition of trust. I personally trust all of them, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Suhartans....

I trust that they are going to do what is best for them. I trust that whatever I say is going to be of little consequence to them, unless it coincidentally meets their objectives. If you "trust" that they are going to do what is right for you, then I think you are a little too trusting an individual.

Can you imagine the storm of protest if Japan came over to the US tell us how to reform our system

They did. A few years ago, I think it was a Japanese prime minister who said something like the United States will never be great until we solve our race problems with the blacks and the Mexicans. He was promptly removed from office.

Given this I would hope that we do very little until they actually ask for help. The worst possible situation would be if we alienated them so badly that even when the major crunch comes they ignore us.

Clark, Japan is not Korea or Indonesia. They don't need our direct help. The help that we can provide, such as buying Japanese products and pushing our trade deficit, Japan does not need to ask. They just do it.

Also don't forget that their bubble already burst, so what if they just do nothing and let time cure all? We are the ones who are worried that our bubble economy is about to burst. May be thats why we are so insistent that Japan do something now. Think about that one.
