From my own personal experience, I learned Spanish and French using immersion. It was marvelous. I had taken regular Spanish in highschool, but in college immersion was used exclusively. My brain wanted to think in English, not in French or Spanish (painstakingly translating each and every response in my head). With immersion a student begins to respond more quickly and to think more quickly in the target language.
