Novell Cancels Developers' Conference
(12/02/96; 1:41 p.m. EST)
By Joseph C. Panettieris, Windows Magazine

Novell has hit a major bump in its race to head off Microsoft and
evangelize its Internet/intranet strategy to software developers.
Specifically, the networking giant has canceled DeveloperNet '97, a
developers' conference that was to be held this week in Orlando, Fla.

Insiders at Novell say DeveloperNet's plug was pulled because there
was not enough time to plan the show, which was expected to be
attended by several thousand people. Novell first announced plans for
the conference on Sept. 17, but now says it will incorporate
DeveloperNet '97 into its next BrainShare conference, to be held
March 23-28 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

DeveloperNet's cancellation comes at a crucial time for Novell. Though
NetWare remains the leading network operating system, Novell missed
the application server revolution increasingly dominated by Windows
NT and UNIX. To compensate, Novell is making a late run at the
Internet revolution with its directory services technology and
IntranetWare (a rebranded NetWare 4.11 with bundled intranet and
Web services). A properly planned developer conference would
certainly have helped Novell's Internet initiative.
