Mike, I believe the third paragraph of your post describes the mindset of some who went through the depression, at least those that feared the failure of commerce. Those who have not the fear of this failure, of not being able to buy what they need, simply stored up some money.
It is just that we have not had any hard times for a long time and people have forgotten that tough times can come again. Just like in the old Testament Israel would repent, they would be delivered from their enemies and enjoy peace. Then they began to sin again and follow false gods, soon the hard times were upon them. So people have forgotten the hard times, we have peace for so long, yet now we also have VX and Sarin gas to add to the H bomb, now that religious conflicts seem to be taking over from ideological/political ones.
Perhaps the Bible is wrong and man will perfect himself and grow and mature and bring that Kingdom of Heaven down to earth in spite of the King! But I think not; that the doubters willingly doubting the creation by God ( since Darwin, note II Peter 3:3-7) and the knowlege doubling every ten years or less (knowledge shall increase, Daniel) are just a few of the prophecies that have become more obvious in the last few years. Oh yes, and hardly any of these prophecies made any sense until Israel became a nation not so long ago....as they are spoken of as a nation (not just a people but a government) in Rev.
Whether the need for food etc. will be a concern of ours when these things come to pass I doubt, but I do not know. So I would say, if the supplies are run like an inventory for a business and rotated out and used as fresh goods replace, the expense is meager and one is able to take advantage of specials for many staples. No extensive time or expense is required. But if one likes to garden as I and my wife and evidently Jane does, we can do everyone a favor by promoting plants which filter out pollutants and provide O2, while we enjoy the fresh veggies. BTW, <Semi Off Topic> Does anyone raise soybeans? There are two kinds, one for cattle and one for people. The "people" kind are very tasty, nutty but definitely a bean; or maybe like a pea and something else with the nut flavor. I believe they are more healthy than tofu and certainly taste great. I certainly have the testimony of every herbivore within a mile, without 2 stout fences, and perhaps the resort to arms, every stalk would be gone within a week. The animals know what is good!
Sorry to ramble, God Bless,
