My thinking on the matter is that it is safer to play puts regardless of one's ability to spot a top. I figure that if your put is going out worthless then you probably would have been in the hole also if you had shorted. This way you just role over your put before or after every expiry. Mind you however one might pay more of a premium this way but at least the downside is capped. I look at what is happening to YHOO today and I'm glad I'm not short anymore.
