Hitachi PC and U.S. Robotics Announce Agreement to Integrate x2 Modem
Technology; Hitachito have First Notebook Computers with x2 - 56Kbps - Modems

BusinessWire, Wednesday, December 04, 1996 at 08:17

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 1996--Hitachi PC
Corp. and U.S. Robotics (NASDAQ: USRX) today announced an agreement
to integrate U.S. Robotics' new "x2" 56 Kbps modem technology with
Hitachi's PC notebook computers, providing mobile users with an
unprecedented solution for speedy on-line communications and
Internet access.
"Hitachi is committed to produce the best notebook communication
solutions, and U.S. Robotics has the leading technology to make
modem communications as fast and reliable as possible,"
said Mark
Yahiro, vice president of marketing and business development for
Hitachi PC. "The incorporation of this cutting-edge x2 technology
into our notebook computers is another important element in our
strategy to meet the needs of the mobile user."
The agreement is the latest step in a strategic alliance
established earlier this year where Hitachi PC and U.S. Robotics
planned to develop, integrate and brand U.S. Robotics communications
technologies with Hitachi PC notebook computers. Presently, Hitachi
integrates U.S. Robotics modems on their C, M, E and soon to be
released, Mx Series notebooks.
"Integrating x2 into Hitachi notebooks provides a great value to
notebook users who need the fastest possible connections over
existing telephone lines," said Michael Seedman, vice president and
general manager of U.S. Robotics' Personal Communications Division.
"With the world's leading ISPs already supporting x2 technology,
Hitachi's mobile customers will immediately have the best possible
options for on-line communications."

Hitachi notebooks with integrated x2 modems will begin to ship in
early 1997. The notebooks will have a sticker that displays the
"Communications by U.S. Robotics" logo, assuring customers that
they are buying a reliable and high-performance product.

Almost twice as fast as modem technology currently available over
standard telephone lines, x2 has demonstrated widespread acceptance
since the 56 Kbps breakthrough technology was introduced last month.
