ESI Names Taylor to Board of Directors

PORTLAND, Ore., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- David F. Bolender, Chairman of the Board of Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESIO) announced the election of Gerald F. Taylor to the company's board of directors. Taylor retired from his position as Chief Financial Officer of Applied Materials (AMAT) in January and currently serves as senior advisor to Jim Morgan, Applied's Chief Executive Officer.

"We are pleased to have Jerry on the ESI board," said Bolender. "His industry and financial experience will add significantly to an already strong board."

"Jerry was a key executive during the dramatic growth of Applied Materials to the industry leader of today," said Donald R. VanLuvanee, ESI's Chief Executive Officer and President. "His experience and broad knowledge of the capital equipment marketplace will benefit ESI as it continues to grow."

Taylor joined Applied Materials in June 1984 where he was the chief financial officer responsible for the global financial functions and legal affairs of the Company. In October 1991, he was promoted to senior vice president.

Mr. Taylor's experience includes more than 30 years in a broad range of international and domestic controllership positions at Schlumberger, Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corporation and Honeywell. Mr. Taylor received his B.S. degree from the University of Nebraska in 1964 and an M.B.A. from the University of Southern California in 1970.

The election of Mr. Taylor at the June 29 meeting brings ESI's board to nine members.
