In WRP65, I reported on the WDC Y2K meeting:
------------------ 4. Hernando Quintero - BRI - Power generation
Based on technical assessment of hundreds of systems in 12 generating facilities including Gas, Oil, and Coal but not Nuclear, 400 person days per site; expert engineers.
15% of systems are not Y2K compliant and have problems ranging from minor inconveniance to loss of life. He didn't say but I'm guessing he's talking about boiler explosions and fires. There are 200 major control and monitoring systems in a power plant.
They found problems found in systems responsible for boilers, water treatment, programmable sequence controls, area control systems, cc20 boiler management, turbine management, smart sensor data freeze, etc. ------------------
1. Is this, in general, similar to your experience.
2. Is the estimate of 400 person days of expert power engineers appropriate for a Gas, Oil, or Coal site?
3. Is the estimate of 15% of the systems having problems accurate... within reason? My real question is, did you find problems as described by Hernando, but knowing that you are under NDA, you might feel free to comment that, "based on unstated experience and expertise", you have no problems with Hernando's findings.
4. Are there approximately 200 major control and monitoring systems in a power plant? More or less, 125, 250, same difference.
5. Does the last paragraph, the one that details the areas (systems) that had problems, fit with your experience?
Was Hernando's report within reason?
If not, what is the reason for the discrepancy?
