As I mentioned a few weeks ago, this scenario has already presented itself with the proposed buyout of SNET in Conn. by SBC. SNET provides long distance to about 30% of its local access phone customers. As part of its buyout (if approved by regulators), SBC will "marry" itself to the SNET local and long distance business, although it probably could not expand long distance offering into the rest of its service area until regulatory approval occurs.
